ABSTRACT

Teotihuacan Tlaloc in Uxmal

Isabel Mercado

Through the consideration of representations found in Uxmal of the so-called Teotihuacan Tlaloc, this article seeks to point out either the syncretic or the influence-based connections between the Maya world in Yucatan and the Teotihuacan culture. That is why descriptions of both Tlaloc´s representation in the “Cuadrángulo de las Monjas” and those present in the “Templo del Adivino” are provided. Also, the main characteristics of the extremely popular “Puuc” architectonical style are reviewed and a relationship between them and the typical rain´s god designs is established. A discussion follows on how different authors have addressed the apparent influence of Teotihuacan over the Mayan area of Petén. Final questions and comments are devoted to the probable intercultural relationship between these two cultural groups.

Keywords: Tlaloc, Chac, Teotihuacan, interculturality, ties and influences.
