ABSTRACT

Dreams and Marvels in Hispanic Novels of Chivalry

Paola Zamudio Topete

Cavalry books keep between its pages uncountable wonders: centaurs, sirens or fauns; demoniac monsters, magical armors, mystery islands or enchanted fountains, are just some of the scenarios in which the knight must fight to restore the order or to find its kept adventures. As well as these wonders, in these works we also find a controversial topic in the Middle Ages: dreams that in cavalry books serve the purpose of announcing the birth of a hero, its death, a future love, the outcome of a battle or even, the form in which an apparently incurable disease may come to an end.

Making an exhaustive analysis of each one of the marvels of cavalry books would be impossible to discuss in one article, so just two will be analyzed: dreams and the hybrid monster.
