ABSTRACT

Massive and intimate: the social presence in the MOOC

Guadalupe Vadillo

When we speak of something is massive, almost immediately we cancel the possibility of intimacy, closeness or individualization. However, in the massive open online courses (MOOC, for its acronym in English) is possible to achieve that sense of intimacy. The purpose of this article is to present ways that allow MOOC designer to achieve this close contact, which is related to better retention and graduation rates. The discussion fits into the perspective of community of inquiry of Anderson and Garrison, which includes not only cognitive presence related knowledge to learn, but with the social and teaching, that generate the sense of closeness and belonging among students and the teacher. The analysis is exemplified with the experience derived from the MOOC Ser más creativos and Aprender, from UNAM on the Coursera platform.
