Nowadays, language teachers have an urgent need for continuing education in applied linguistics, academic competences and the uses of telecommunications. Since Applied Linguistics studies problems related to the use of languages in varied contexts, it is the basis the continuing education of language teachers. The development of academic competences and the use of telecommunications are also dealt with through distance education. The authors are combining the above mentioned aspects in order to offer a suitable program for Mexican language teachers. The present study is part of a larger project sponsored by the National University's Support Program for Institutional projects for the Improvement of Teaching. The study was carried out from October to November, 2000. The background of the study, foundations for its design, and a description of materials, activities and forms of communication are given. Final remarks on some answers to our initial questions are presented.
