Like some other processes in nature, the biological immune system has served as an inspiration to scientists to solve problems. The biological immune system presents certain characteristics that make it very useful from the information processing point of view, such as: memory, fault tolerance, learning capability, pattern recognition and distributed processing, among others. This new research area has been called "artificial immune system", and it has originated several models and algorithms, which have been successfully applied to real-world problems.
