ABSTRACT

Communalize the media: the Word of our communities

Edgardo L. García

On June 11, 2013 the amendments and additions to the provisions of the constitutional articles on telecommunications were published. At present, the national debate adjustments to the secondary laws of the reform and the adoption of the new Law on Broadcasting and Telecommunications are being discussed. From Oaxaca, a group of organizations, communities, and indigenous communicators have launched the proposal on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples to the Media to be included in the new legislation. In this context we ask ourselves: what can we, indigenous communicators, do? How to reverse the situation to which we subjected the commercial media? How can we resist creating something new? What is hope and where to find the alternatives? We propose another possible way: the communalization of media, i.e., free media planted in each neighborhood, district or town based on horizontality, collective work, sharing, reciprocity and everyday resistance people.
