This work focuses on the history and the processes of cosmetic production. The first part of this manuscript seeks to develop on the different social aspects and impact of cosmetics in ancient civilizations. Moreover, in the end the current social role of cosmetics is discussed. In its second part, the different processes by which cosmetics and dyes are synthesized are described. Finally, in a chronological manner, it is expressed how biotechnology has played a significant and fundamental role in the synthesis and mass production of cosmetics and dyes.

The topics described in this work are of relevance since along the manuscript we prove how cosmetics and dyes have shaped and marked entire societies (both old and new). This is why writing in depth on processes of production, especially biotechnological techniques, is of importance.
