ABSTRACT
The chivalric romances are an essential part of the literary production of the Renaissance and Baroque in Portugal as a result of their inventive richness and power of suggestion. However, they have been unfairly neglected by both the public and the academia. This article sets out to contextualize the origins of chivalric literature in the Iberian Peninsula, with special emphasis on the kingdom of Portugal. Attention is paid to the most relevant romances and features of this genre, given their great importance in the context of the Portuguese overseas expansion overseas.
