Some Recommendations for the Seismic Rehabilitation of Buildings using Energy Dissipating Devices

Keyword:structural design recommendations, seismic energy dissipating systems, rehabilitation, passive energy dissipation.

Abstrac

Some recommendations about the seismic rehabilitation of buildings with energy dissipating devices are given, and a list of needed research topics related to this subject is presented. The paper is in accordance with the specifications given in Appendix A of the Complementary Technical Norms for Seismic Design of the proposed Mexico City Seismic Code. The paper is limited to passive control dissipating devices with force-deformation curves that do not depend on the velocity nor on the excitation frequency, but on the relative displacements occurring at the devices' ends. The first part of the paper deals with performance-based design concepts and with their application to the seismic design of buildings with energy dissipating devices. Later, the most common analytical procedures used for these buildings are mentioned. Some general recommendations are given for the structural design of the system and for selecting the locations of the dissipating devices. Also some suggestions are made about the laboratory tests that should be made on the dissipating devices. At the end, some needed studies are listed that should serve to write our own guidelines for the performance-based seismic design of buildings with energy dissipating devices.
