ABSTRACT

Discussions on statistical inference in the census of the city of Mexico, 1790

Leticia Mayer

The census of 1790, caused an interesting dispute between the Viceroy, second Count of Revillagigedo, and Father José Antonio de Alzate y Ramirez. The debate, which includes more than two years of letters, shows the importance of knowledge that lies between the scientific pursuit and the state needs, as well the inferential processes intended to analyze Mexico City population.

Keywords: Census, inferential, statistics.
