ABSTRACT

Virtual learning environment and online courses: Teachers as a central factor

María del Carmen Nolasco Salcedo

Online training allows or encourages a change in the teacher’s role. It is in this sense, that the objective of this paper is to analyze the implications of the application of an unconventional model, to the teaching process, supported by the Information and Communication Technology and incorporating new methodological paradigms to the teaching-learning process for the courses presentation and management. This should encourage students to change the role they had played until now, given their preliminary training process, that has been based, most times, on a traditional model.

Using online courses to support the teaching-learning process centered in the student, involves knowing what features the online teacher must have, and how they can help their students in their new role.

In this project, it has been understanding as a support tool an e-learning platform or virtual learning environment that integrates a set of tools for online teaching and learning, allowing non-face-to-face teaching (e-learning) or mixed (b-learning), which combines online learning with face-to-face classroom experiences (PLS Ramboll 2004; Jenkins, Browne and Walker, 2005).

On the other hand, there is the importance of using the lessons learned by traditionalist teachers, because they can take advantage of their experience, to teach in a better way by implementing the use of information and communication technologies.
