In this article the participation of researchers in the popularization of science is analyzed. For this purpose, the statutory definition of this activity in the context of UNAM’s academic staff activities as defined in the Academic Staff Regulations (Legislación Universitaria) is taken to start the analysis. This is followed by the description of how the popularization of science is organized in the institutes and research centers in UNAM as well as the importance of science vulgarization activities in the overall evaluation of the researcher’s work. Personal opinions as well as those of selected members about the role of scientist in science vulgarizations are presented.
