In recent years, the study of leeches has developed a number of diverse lines of research. Herein, an overview of these interesting perspectives on these organisms is presented using case studies on recent developments in the characterization of anticoagulants, studies of the symbiotic relationships between leeches and bacteria, as well as a short history of the use of leeches to relieve various afflictions of human health.
