ABSTRACT
About censorship and other inquisitions in New Spain
Andrés Íñigo Silva
The Holy Inquisition is one of the bureaucratic institutions with worst fame, and not without
reason. In this paper I will show specifically the role that it played to censor the dissemination
of ideas through the written word in New Spain. Due to the so called “black
legend of Spain” we tend to think that the punishments were severe and that the society
lived terrified, but the reality is that from heresy through Illustration, the Inquisition was
not that efficient as we think.
