The use of Cannabis as a substance of abuse has been present throughout the history of mankind. Currently it is the most common used illicit drug worldwide; its use has generally increased among adolescents and young people, corresponding to a diminishing perception of the drug’s risks at the social level. In these groups a close relationship has been found between marijuana consumption and depression, suicidal thoughts, anxiety and schizophrenia as well as a reduction of cognitive skills important for learning. There are many scientific evidences linking marijuana with disease in addicts who develop addiction, tolerance and withdrawal syndrome.

It is important not get confused between the effects of marijuana as a drug and the effects of some of its compounds as medication. The dispute about marijuana legalization and its recreational use are currently a common issue in the social, academic, scientific and legal fields.
