ABSTRACT

Archaeoastronomy applied to the case of Tula: preliminary progress

Héctor Patiño Rodríguez Malpica

It’s a work delaying the research of knowledge astronomic reach by the Toltec’s for build the ancient city of Tula accord to the celestial dynamic. Is possible consider the Toltec skill for harmonic relationship with the landscape or almost look to it, but rest investigate in what sense.

The Archaeoastronomy get even more firmness in that a method and theory relate. Considerate traditional astronomy, cultural o popular, the quid is that permit to give account of an antique reality that marked the rhythm of the collective activities, so like the building or agriculture activity, liturgy and ritual. Implies a great responsibility because require the documentation of movement of the celestial bodies; particularly the transit of the sun during all of year to evaluate and abstracted the “calendar horizon”. So much, to pretend discover this intervention in the morphology of Mesoamerican city in corresponds to the geometrical development. The astronomical and geometrical knowledge will have a special place between the forms of Mesoamerican wise and most of them lose for complete.

The present essay is formed by two parts. One considers what correspond with the study of Astronomy applied in the conception of Tula Grande precinct and the other with the geometry. For lack of space, only is possible present what correspond with the advances from Archaeo astronomical observation realize at Tula in recess a similar opportunity four expose the geometrical question like second part. Is necessary considers that geometrical appear conform the key stone between the observation of stars and establish the eminencies of landscape, but fault of investigation for abstracted the form like the city reach this unity.

Our hypothesis is that an array of factors (the sun transit, the landscape and some angles observed with relation to the precinct of Tula Grande), would intervene for distribute certain buildings. The question is to seek what afford the Archaeo-astronomical research takes like a referent the landscape and certain buildings, particularly the pyramidal building, the halls of colonnade and the ball courts what appear have a central place in development of the morphology of the Mesoamerican city. Because the form long-flatted of this buildings, the play of parallel lines operated conjoined the parts that arranged this union, at least in a geometrical sense or in a “grid” that in cases played a particular place in development of urban morphology.

An array of questions to go up: are or not astronomical structures, or only are geometrically speaking, and so on. In the actual state of knowledge, no bodies doubtless that the Toltec’s realize the union of astronomy and geometry, but today is unknown to us in what sense is done, or how was the quid of the union, what social implications to had, etc.
