What do we say “a poco” for in conversation?

Abstract

The present article is about the Mexican phrase “a poco” in naturally occurring conversations. We apply the conversation-analytic method to investigate this phrase in telephone and video conversation recordings. The study shows the functions of the phrase in social interaction; particularly, it describes the interactional context where “a poco” is produced and the social actions in which the speakers use the phrase.

Ariel Vázquez Carranza, Universidad de Guadalajara

Licenciado en Lengua Inglesa por la UAEMex, Maestro en Estudios lingüísticos y Doctor en Sociolingüística por la Universidad de Essex, Inglaterra, realizó un postdoctorado en el CIESAS, Cd. de México y es Nivel 1 del Sistema Nacional de Investigadores. Sus líneas de investigación son la sociolingüística y la interacción social. Actualmente es profesor asociado en el Departamento de Lenguas Modernas en el CUCSH e imparte clases dentro de la Licenciatura y Maestría en Enseñanza del Inglés como Lengua Extranjera.
