The objective of our research was to get to know the problems, challenges and coping strategies in Amuzga families of Xochistlahuaca during the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on the emotional and physical effects. The study is qualitative and presents the results of a workshop with Amuzga families in November 2020, in the community of Xochistlahuaca, Guerrero. The methodology was based in small discussion groups, by strategic questions and brainstorming.
Some contradictions were observed in the speeches and descriptions. We also found that: 1) some families and leaders continued to be governed by their uses and customs during the pandemic; 2) the lack of information on COVID-19 by municipal and health authorities led to anger and an endogenous interpretation among families; 3) contagion of residents produced fear, stress and anguish; 4) there is a resignification of culture through traditional medicine and healer, and 5) self-consumption and use of flora and fauna diversity was promoted.
