Abstract

Primary metabolites of plants are involved in their growth, development and reproduction, while secondary metabolites play a very important role in their adaptation to environmental stress and in defense against potential predators and pathogens (organisms that cause disease). Plants produce and release these metabolites when they are under stress conditions, caused by other living organisms, non-living factors, or natural disasters. This has drawn the attention of researchers from different areas of science and technology, therefore the enormous benefits of secondary metabolites have been discovered in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, agricultural and nutraceutical (food) industry sectors, mainly.
