SUAyED and its role in empowering people

Abstract

The Open University and Distance Education System (SUAyED) of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2022. During its existence, it has helped to bring knowledge to more and more people, and, adding to the objectives of UNESCO, has generated societies of knowledge and has contributed to empowering people. This is because it has allowed people who are interested to study a degree without neglecting their daily activities, either in the open system, with the support of an educational platform and non-mandatory face-to-face mentorships, or in the distance system, where everything is mediated by technologies. Such systems are offered in various locations and for various degrees. This text briefly analyzes the development in one of the campi, the Faculty of Higher Studies Acatlán, and describes its evolution and the degree of preparation and training needed to make this system a benchmark in educational matters.
