What’s in a number?

Numbers are everywhere around us. From preparing a recipe, to buying food, or checking the speed of a car, numbers are deeply ingrained in our lives. As scientists, we spend most of our time searching for the numbers that explain the universe, evaluating them, and presenting arguments when they are not convincing. From numbers, we have created civilization and modified the understanding of ourselves and the world around us. In this article, I will tell you about the importance of a number through three stories: the search for universal constants, the first international scientific collaboration, and a story about the risks of not knowing certain numbers.
