Traditional medicine from Mexico to the world of phytomedicine

Traditional Mexican medicine is a product of the medical knowledge we have of our country’s native plants and those brought here long ago. Many of Mexico’s native plants have been studied to verify their medicinal properties and, even more so, to discover new health benefits. Since it is impossible to discuss them all, we present five Mexican plants, each with unique characteristics: one that has spread throughout the world, another that is used in Africa, another that is at risk of extinction, another as an example of a plant that can be confused with others, and finally, one that has been found to have a medicinal effect different from that claimed by traditional medicine. All these plants have been scientifically studied, and their therapeutic properties have been supported. They are examples of the floral, medicinal, and cultural richness of Mexico.
