Transition from secondary to higher education: a study at UNAM

The National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) has a diverse and substantial student body. In the context of an institution of Upper Secondary Education and Higher Education, the monitoring of the school trajectories of its students, considering the transition between these educational levels, is a valuable tool that allows to accurately and adequately identify the support needs that students require in order to reduce school dropout and lag. This study explores the school performance and terminal efficiency of students from the 2009 generation of the UNAM baccalaureate (ENP and CCH), during their passage through these educational levels, as well as their correlation with school performance and regularity during the first year of Higher Education.
Of a total of 34 070 students, the analysis of their school trajectories during Upper Secondary Education showed considerable dropout and lag, in addition to a low terminal efficiency (56.6%). Likewise, one in four students, who entered the UNAM baccalaureate and completed it, were regular at the end of the first year of Higher Education. ...
